All of our Managers have been employed at Newgate Kennels and Cattery
for a minimum of 4 years. We have three Managers and one Assistant Manager. At all
times there is a Manager on duty. Each have achieved the following:
- N.V.Q. II in Small Animal Care
- N.V.Q. in Management
Joel Millett - General Manager
I was born and bred here at Newgate and I am now lucky enough
to work here full time. Newgate has always been my home and I have
helped out in the business along with the rest of the family. For
a while I followed a career in horticulture gaining various City
and Guild qualifications and a degree in Landscape Architecture.
Since becoming a manager in 1987 I have helped restructure and redesign
the business and gained 4 animal related NVQs. I love working here
as I get to share all the wonderful pets with a great clientele
and my colleagues are my extended family.
Phil
Broadhurst - Manager
I first started working at Newgate in 1994. Throughout this time I have gained 5 NVQs. I enjoy working at the kennels as it has a friendly and caring atmosphere. My extra managerial responsibilities include the sales area, staff training and work experience students. In my spare time I like watching sports and sadly I am still waiting for Liverpool FC to win the premiership! I also enjoy spending time with my two Cocker Spaniels, Halco and Stanley and looking after Jasper my Amazon Green Parrot.
Clare
Raymond -
Manager
I joined Newgate Kennels in 1999. I have achieved 5 N.V.Q.
qualifications – Animal Care Level II, Dog Grooming Level
II, Animal Management Level 3, Customer Service Level III and Management
Level IV. Over and above my normal managerial duties I am a qualified
groomer and help train the junior staff. I enjoy working at Newgate
Kennels for a lot of reasons, the main one being I enjoy working
with animals, the day is varied, stress free and I prefer ‘hands-on’
work ... My favourite animals are cats, which I have looked after
and had as pets for many years. My last pet cat was a 3- legged
grey tortoise-shell called Mortimer, whose main objective was to
share her hair!
Jenny
Godfrey -
Assistant Manager
I started work at Newgate in July 2002 and during this time I have achieved 3 NVQs, Animal Care level 2, Customer Care and Management both at level 3. At present I am studying for a work placed diploma in Dog Grooming. In the summer of 2010 I started assisting Clare in the grooming room and can now confidently trim all breeds. I also enjoy my other managerial duties and that my job is so varied. I love looking after all the animals and getting to know both them and their owners. I especially like dogs but don't have a favourite breed. At home I have a loopy, one eyed cat called Tikka. My other interests include animal behaviour, shopping, socialising and watching sport.
Phil
Proudlove - Assistant Manager (previously Trainee Assistant Manager)
I have been working here since 2002. I have completed 5 NVQ's - Animal Care Level 2 and 3; Customer Service Level 3; ITQ Level 2 and Management Level 3. I hope to complete a Level 4 management course soon. I play ice hockey in my spare time and support Arsenal FC. My favourite breed of dog is the Pug - I just need to persuade my girlfriend to let us get one (it's her favourite breed too). My ambition is to work hard, save money and retire living in Canada.
Sophie Willcock – Assistant Manager
I began working at Newgate, part time, in 2002 and after completing my degree in 2007 became a full time member of staff. Since then I have completed three NVQs. Customer Service level 2, Animal Care and Management both at level 3. I like working at Newgate due to the variety of animals. In my spare time I support Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey team. My ambition is to continue to work with animals in this country or Australia.
Administrator
The main role is to help you with your booking enquiries.
To help you, if you have had a problem getting through on the phone,
Tuesday and Thursday mornings are always quieter. The phone never
seems to stop ringing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Pat
Child
I started working at Newgate Kennels in August 1999. I was
a client at Newgate Kennels and Joel happened to ask me if I knew
of anyone who would be willing to put the data base on the new computer
he had recently had installed. I agreed to do it and have been here
ever since. Originally, I qualified as a Medical Secretary. I enjoy
working at Newgate Kennels because I have always been interested
in animals, especially dogs and have 5 at home and 2 cats. My spare
time is taken up looking after my family, learning Spanish and helping
to re-home unwanted animals, especially dogs.
Kennel
Assistants (full-time)
We have 12 full-time Kennel Assistants. All have achieved their N.V.Q.
II in Animal Care, except for one assistant who is part way through
the course. We use this qualification as our bench mark. All new
full time Assistants have to commit to achieving this qualification
when they are employed.

by N.V.Q. Level II in Animal Care and N.V.Q. Level II in Customer
Service. I also work with the builders who are refurbishing the
animal accommodation at Newgate Kennels. I enjoy working with

and Great Danes, etc. At home I have a Labrador and enjoy walking

Stuart
Roberts
I have worked at Newgate Kennels since 2004. Since then I have achieved my NVQ in Animal Care. The reason I enjoy working here so much is that I get to see all the different breeds and to be able to look after them. My favourite breed is the Border Collie. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching football and also playing on the computer especially Facebook. I am also a part-time DJ!
Michael Watson
Working with animals is infinitely preferable to working with people – their needs are more transparent and easier to fulfil. My favourite animal is the tiger, fortunately for me we do not have any at NK&C or I would leave work much lighter than I arrived. I like all dogs and do not really have a favourite breed. My hobbies consist of anything that is free, including reading, as well as slightly more expensive things such as art. I have recently discovered a liking, but no talent, for painting. My ambition is to continue being a truly wonderful and modest person.
Zsuzsa Bernaczki
I started working at Newgate in April 2009 and have since gained my NVQ II in Animal Care. I have picked up a lot about dog breeds and how to handle nervous or aggressive dogs. In my free time I train Daisy, my own Jack Russell and read books on dog training.
Paul Watkins
I started at Newgate kennels in 2003 working on Saturdays when I was still at school. Whilst at college studying Aerospace Engineering I carried on working part time. I am now a full time member of staff taking my NVQ II in Animal Care on day release. In my spare time I play football and go ice skating. I enjoy working at Newgate as everyone is so friendly
Zoltan Bernaczki
I have been working at Newgate since October 2010. I got tired of sitting in front of a machine all day so gave up my career in computing and chose to work with living creatures. I find it a lot more enjoyable. I became a vegetarian in 1999 because I don't agree with the modern ways of keeping farm animals. At present I am working towards my NVQ II in Animal Care. I am fond of the bigger breeds like the Great Dane though through my work here I have learnt that the smaller breeds have their charm too.
Kennel
Assistants (part time)
We have 18 part-time Kennel Assistants currently employed
by Newgate Kennels and Cattery. All part-time staff have to be
a minimum age of 15 years and receive an induction followed by
a minimum 3 months apprenticeship.
Emma
Avery
I first started part time working at Newgate in 2002. During the last 10 years I have also worked here full time at which point I gained an NVQ II in Animal Care. I enjoy working at Newgate as I am very passionate about the care and well being of animals. Whilst I am back working part time again I have started my training on reception where I am enjoying learning new skills and the opportunity to great both our 2 and 4 legged clients. In 2010 I graduated from Chester Uni with a BA Hons in Dance. I now teach regular classes in Cheshire for a variety of people including young children and disabled adults.
